UCI Compass MAPSS: Creating Citizen Data Storytellers through Data Literacy

In its vision to increase student success through organization wide digital fluency, UCI’s Compass MAPSS (Metrics & Analytics Promoting Student Success) Certificate Program was created. This innovative program is organized into role-specific tracks designed to enhance 21st-century data science and visualization thinking. Central to this initiative is how an understanding of neuroscience and cognitive psychology facilitates successful comprehension of new information. Interpreting and communicating complex information effectively has become increasingly critical. Research reveals that the human brain is wired for stories to organize, retain, and recall information far better than raw data.

Participants will:

•Explore why storytelling is vital for data comprehension,

•Learn to integrate storytelling into data literacy training,

•Review research,

•Learn data culture creation techniques, and

•Empower their team to become Citizen Data Storytellers who drive action and inspire change.

This session is essential for anyone looking to harness the full potential of their data and their team.
