Join us in exploring “Equitable Strategies for Identifying and Mitigating Harm in Student Data Analytics,” a session designed to inspire discussions on the ways in which the use of student data can inadvertently harm certain groups and how to assess and address inequitable practices in higher education. Grounded in the Boyer 2030 Commission’s equity/excellence imperative, our session aligns with the “Leading Change” provocation, focusing on “Assessment and Accountability,” which embraces the idea that equity as a precondition of excellence necessitates institutional change, with a keen emphasis on revising metrics for measuring progress.
The session aims to empower participants with actionable strategies for creating more equitable paradigms in data analytics within their institutions, as they discover novel ways to question prevailing data methodologies and engage students in their own data. Engaging in lively discussions with interactive group activities based on real-world scenarios, participants will: · grapple with questions around the “do no harm” tenant and unintended consequences, · discuss the importance of data driven decision making in student success, · collaboratively explore strategies to mitigate/alleviate potential harms while still providing meaningful data sets that can be used to holistically understand and help students.
Together, let’s advance the conversation on reshaping institutional data practices for equity.
How does the session relate the concept of equity as a prerequisite for excellence in the context of institutional change and progress assessment?
